several modern birth control methods
so briefly, i think i can classify birth control into the conventional and not-so convention by products of our modern habits;

1. Chemically; patches, pills, hormonal shots, spermicide.
(these are popular although the side effects vary from weight gain, mood swings to more positive effects of acne reduction and mammalian gland size increase)
2. Physical barrier; male/female condoms, non-hormonal IUD, surgical sterilization (both genders)
3. Physical willpower : (ironically, willpower isn't a physical thing but the effects can be felt) withdrawal (can be mentally too difficult, or also cause mental stress thereafter), abstinence
4. Physical thermal : using a calender and checking temperatures with a thermometer (for females)
It is the males that are more prone to temperature change since the human male testes is located outside the body in the testes sac. Healthy sperm production is kept 10 degrees below the body temperature, so keeping the testes on the outside of the body helps with sperm development.
Incidentally, I learnt at 15 that the origin of the word orchid, comes from the greek word for testicles (orghi -> orchid) since the first person who discovered the orchid might have thought it looks like the male organ. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=orchid
That's why having a laptop on your lap could reduce a guy's healthy sperm count.
Hot showers also serve to 'cook' the sperm, possibly denaturing the protein structure of the tiny gene carriers.
Also, tight underwear and tight pants could reduce sperm count. This is because tight pants prevent the testes sac from loosening slightly away from the body as a method to increase heat lose. (the testicle sac also firm up closer to the pelvis when feeling chilly to gain heat from the body.
So maybe a tri-combination of laptops, hot showers and popularity of jeans (which are usually tight) have reduced the population count in developed countries.
Notwithstanding the rise of pornography, strip clubs, infidelity, dating sites (of the ashley madison variety), that would break up the family structure and reduce trust, leading to population implosion.
Especially if explicit content becomes mainstream, like in Japanese manga and anime.
