morning grumpiness helps speeds up wakefulness

Frowning, pouting. the annoyance that pours like an angry geyser from sleep being interrupted.

This sour morning mood (especially after a late night of merry making, drinking for instance, among other night activities), may serve to speed up the heart rate and increased blood flow to the brain for increased mental capacity.

The facial muscles that frown/pout, increases the blood blood to the brain. This subsequently provides increased cognitive and mental faculties.

Especially for nomadic tribes before the dawn of civilization, a feral predator (such as big cats and wolves) coming across humans without a safe sleeping location could be inevitably disastrous. Thus blood flow is instantly accelerated by very rapid heart rate and cold sweat for cooling muscles, as part of the 'fight or flight' response.

Likewise, a tree house, mud hut or cave dwelling in prehistoric times may also not be secure against small or slender deadly creatures who are able to bypass doors or rocks used to guard an entrance . So something creepy crawly may kick in our survival instinct going from sleeping state to full wakefulness and needing to defend against a snake, rat, spider, scorpion or centipede that may bypass a house's defense and hurt us or our young.

This may explain why I (very) occasionally wake up with my heart in going a hundred miles an hour after a bad dream.

Also, I notice a correlation between occurrences of my nightmares and a heavy supper/snack just before bed.

That said, the inverse seems to true as well, going to bed hungry has the potential to stress your body, and invoke a night terror from the stress. (but perhaps most of the lucid dreaming may be from work/family related stress.

So maybe listen to calming music? Music is suppose to help heal the soul after all.

Classical music helps calm me, because of its familiarity, but different music may calm different people.

(anyway, i think understanding why my wife is grum-(*cough*.. i  mean, less than pleasant) in the morning is important to my survival rate. likewise, it may explain why girls are much more easily startled and more likely to quickly lash out, being the defenders of home and hearth)
